The actual moment of Full Moon is in the early morning of Saturday, September 10th at 06:08 AM EDT (3:28 PM IST) in sidereal Aquarius in Purva Bhadrapada Nakshatra.

Today’s Full Moon phase marks the start of the yearly otherworldly Ancestral Fortnight of Pitru Paksha. This is a special time within each year when the boundaries between the human and spirit worlds are especially fluid, and prayers and offering to one’s departed ancestors can be readily received. It is a time to call in deceased family members to offer gratitude for the sacrifices they made, and also to heal that which is in need of resolution.

Through consciously connecting with one’s clan and those who have shaped one’s own destiny in both obvious and imperceptible ways, these two weeks can become a heightened gateway to transform stuck or compulsive behavior’s borne out of patterns of collective ancestral trauma.

Traditional prayer offerings the favorite food and drink items of those who have died. These are mentally offered to these departed family members.  This period of reflecting back is a time to hold off on major worldly beginnings such as weddings, house-blessings or starting a business.

Pitri-Paksha takes place yearly during the dark half of the lunar month of Bhadrapada , which coincides with the Full Moon in either Purva Bhadrapada Nakshatra or Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra. Known as ‘The Scorching Pair’, these two nakshatras are symbolized respectively as the front and back halves of a funeral cot. They carry connotations of the ability to walk between human and otherworldly realms.

In North America, this year Pitru-Paksha starts on Friday, September 9th and ends on the New Moon on Sunday, September 25th.
